Katy Perry's "Walking On Air" - Song Review

With PRISM's October 22 release date right around the corner, current pop heavyweight Katy Perry has been teasing fans with material from the new record for the past few months. While we first got the somewhat familiar, ultimately generic "Roar" as the lead single, Perry released the Juicy J-assisted, trap music inspired "Dark Horse" as a promotional single to calm the anticipation. Fast forward to today and once again we get to lose ourselves in the 90s dance music laced qualities of the album's latest teaser, "Walking On Air", a nice, electro-pop experiment that kind of shows Perry doing something a bit different than the typical uplifting, straight up pop release that we have heard from her dozens of times before. While the new song is not what I would call perfect, it may be my favorite release from the upcoming album so far. It just makes you want to smile and dance.

When the song was first teased alongside "Dark Horse" during Perry's Pepsi/VMA promotional campaign, the chorus of "Walking On Air" stood out as a throwback to the great years of 90s dance and house music (think CeCe Peniston), where many people probably lost their inhibitions on the dance floor every Friday night. Immediately, the track was a standout for showing the pop artist step out of her comfort zone... at least for a little bit. With its uptempo dance production, the new song sounds like it could be the work of a renowned DJ (David Guetta, Zedd, Avicii) featuring the vocals of Perry. At times, the song is a glowing effort, which may follow a strict club formula, but for some reason the track does not accomplish everything it should.

When Perry tries to hit the high notes sprinkled throughout the three and a half minute track, she falls a tad bit flat. She just doesn't have the register needed to accomplish such a vocal feat. Lyrically, the song is good, "Even heaven is jealous of our love, yes we make angels cry, raining down on us from up above" is a catchy line, but the hook is underwhelming and some cringe-worthy moments find their way into the inspirational, carefree track of falling head over heels in love. Once again, just like with "Roar" and "Dark Horse", "Walking On Air" is great in pieces, when certain aspects are dissected, but as a whole it seems to be an average pop offering. I commend the release, it's my favorite of the recent three, just not amazing!
