Isn’t love a mystery? It turns out that dating is a bit of a mystery, too. No matter how many dates you’ve been on, there’s probably something about dating that you still don’t know.
And no, we’re not talking about the fact that guys never date on Super Bowl day. That’s a well known fact!
Dating can be fun and exciting, but it can also be scary and nerve-wracking. Going out on a first date can be the start of something amazing, and it could lead to marriage and kids with the love of your life.
On the flipside, a first date can also be totally disastrous and cause you to give up on men completely!
The dating scene is fraught with hits and misses, and some of us get stuck on it for years until finally meeting the One. Happily, dating usually has more hits than misses. But among the Mr Interestings and Mr Passionates are the Mr Arrogants and the Mr Losers.
We, at Beauty and Tips thought it would be a fab idea to take a closer look at the dating scene. Here are 20 interesting facts about dating:
Speed Dating Was Invented By A Rabbi
When you think of speed dating, you might picture rows of guys and gals all getting to know each other before a timer signals that it’s time to move onto the next person.
You probably don’t picture a Rabbi.
However, speed dating has Jewish origins, and was invented by a Rabbi living and working in Los Angeles.
The Rabbi got the idea after musing about the Jewish tradition of parties held for Jewish singles who wanted to meet someone.
Speed dating has become popular around the world, and is often seen as a last resort for people who have so far had no luck online dating.
Dates Often Remain Friends
Especially when talking to a potential date online, it’s common to swap Facebook details. It’s a better way of staying in touch with them, and gives us a better chance to see what they’re all about.
Plus we get to see all their photos!
Even when the eventual doesn’t work out, almost 60% of us remain Facebook friends with our dates.
Sometimes we remain friends with them for years and years.
There is no universal reason for this. Perhaps we just forget to delete them, or maybe there is a hope at the back of our minds that maybe we’ll get together at some point.
Until they get married and have kids, of course.
Dating Commonly Gets Serious Between December and January
If you’ve been casually dating someone for a few weeks or months and aren’t sure where you stand, you might get a better idea between Christmas and Valentine’s Day. This is because, according to a survey carried out by Yahoo! Personals, this is the time period when dating tends to get a bit serious.
It’s hardly surprising. What with Santa Claus visiting us with his gifts and Valentine’s Day being the time when Cupid shoots us with his arrow, the period between December 25th and February 14th is the most romantic time of the year.
In Colorado, You Can’t Kiss Your Date If They’re Sleeping
There are some bizarre laws in this world, and they’re certainly not limited to countries you’ve never heard of.
Take the state of Colorado for example. In this U.S. state it’s illegal for a man to kiss his partner if she is sleeping. We’re gonna guess that it works the other way around, too.
So if your date falls asleep before you in Colorado, the one thing you absolutely mustn’t do is kiss them. Just in case, you know, someone is watching you, reports you and you end up in prison.
Which would be totally uncool.
It Takes A While Before Dating Turns Into An Exclusive Relationship
One of the biggest things we get anxious about when dating is knowing when we’re still dating and when we’ve entered into an exclusive, serious relationship. When does the moment happen when you’re definitely an item and no one else should be involved?
On average, it takes as many as eight dates before we can safely say that we’re now officially an item.
This is something of an unwritten rule, though, so to be sure you should always seek clarity from the other person.
Here Is How Much We Spend On A Date
Remember that time you dated Mr Thrifty who bought you a $1 coffee before finishing yours off for you after you left a bit? He was an unusual type.
According to research, the average amount we spend on a date is $43. This usually includes food and drink, and it’s common for the guy to take care of everything on the first date. If there is a second date, the woman usually insists on paying for her half of things.
And Here’s What It Means If A Woman Offers To Pay
If a woman does offer to pay on a first date, it usually always means that she hasn’t enjoyed it and won’t be wanting a second one. She wants to make sure that she doesn’t owe him for anything, and just wants to say goodbye guilt-free.
Blue Is The Warmest Colour
According to gender roles, women love pink and men love blue.
And according to gender roles, baby girls should wear pink and baby boys should wear blue.
While you may think that we all outgrow these colours as we get older, the truth is that women remain unconsciously attracted to men in blue.
So if you’re a guy reading this, the best way to get a woman under your spell on a date is by wearing blue.
The Online Dating Industry Is A Lucrative Industry
If you’re looking for a fresh career and consider yourself an expert in dating, you should definitely consider launching a dating site.
According to the numbers, the online dating industry makes almost $2,000,000 a year.
That’s a staggering amount of money, and it means that all our failed romances and our tears haven’t gone to waste – they’ve brought a handful of people a lot of money!!
There are many different online dating sites out there that cater to different niches. Some are aimed at professionals and charge a subscription fee, while others are entirely free and have a broader target audience.
There are even dating sites aimed specially at rockers!
Be Wary Of Free Dating Sites
It’s said that around 10% of new profiles on free dating sites are scammers.
There are usually easy ways to spot scammers. For one thing, they direct you to another website, and often they will ask for your email address in the first message.
Most of the time, they’re way too keen from the start.
For Many Daters, Confidence Remains An Issue
Are you confident when you head out on a first date? Don’t fret if you aren’t. According to research, 40% of us lack confidence when we meet out date for the first time.
This means that the next time you head out on a date, try not to worry too much that he’s not gong to like you, or that you’re going to do something super embarrassing. Just remember that he’s having the same worries, and that it’s very possible that you actually have more confidence than him!
Speed Daters Make Super Snappy Decisions
We’re all familiar with the concept of speed dating. A boy and girl sit opposite each other, and get about a minute or so to see if there is mutual attraction.
A minute doesn’t sound like much at all. How are you going to know if you’re really interested in this guy in just a minute?
Worse still, if you like him, how are you going to convince him that you’re totally cool and that he should date you in just sixty seconds?
Unfortunately, you don’t even get as much as a minute. According to research carried out by the University of Pennsylvania, speed daters make up their minds about the other person within around three seconds.
Wow.
It’s certainly food for thought!
See if this is true the next time you go to a speed date event. Do you really make your mind up about a guy in just three seconds?
Single Parents Dig Single Parents
Over 90% of single parents would rather meet another single parent.
Men Don’t Want Women To Foot The Bill
Men are the perfect gentlemen, with only one percent of American men saying that a woman should pay her way on a first date.
So charming!
Though we’re really interested to know who is included in that one percent.
The number is actually down. In 2014, two percent of American men said women should pay their way on a first date.
Go To A Coffee Shop If You Want To Flirt
Most people – both men and women – say they’d rather not meet their date in a cinema for obvious reasons. Why would you want to spend two hours not even talking to your date?
However, restaurants are also poor choices, presumably because people find it hard to relax and have fun while they’re eating.
Coffee shops are known to be among the best places to go out on a date. They’re generally quiet and relaxed places where the two of you can get to know each other and indulge in a bit of flirting.
Plus, holding a cup of coffee in your hand gives you something to do, and prevents awkwardness!
But If You Must Go To A Restaurant …
Okay, so if you really, really, REALLY want to go to a restaurant on your date, you should at least by picky regarding where you go.
According to research, Italian restaurants are the most popular choice for a first date. Is it because of the food or the atmosphere? It’s probably a bit of both.
Before you take your date for pasta, confirm that they actually like Italian food first.
And perhaps try your best not to get caught sucking up the longest string of spaghetti EVER!
We Love It When Our Date Mirrors Us
Apparently, mirroring your dates body language is a fab way to impress them. Why would this be? Well, think about it: You wouldn’t mirror someone you didn’t like. If you begin mirroring your date, it must mean that, hey, you kinda like this person.
Which, as you’d expect, makes them feel pretty gosh darn chuffed with themselves!
However, mirroring is always done unconsciously. We don’t actually realise that we’re doing it. Unless you want to look odd, don’t copy them on purpose. You may find yourself copying their every move!
Don’t Have A Bad Hair Day
The list of dating turn-offs is quite extensive, and includes things like bad acne, missing teeth, halitosis and belching.
It also includes hair mistakes.
The last thing you want when going out on a date is a bad hair day. You will notice – and so will they.
This is as true men as it is for women. After all, women like guys to have good hair (and by good hair, we mean a style that actually suits them). Make a hair faux pas, and you may never see your date ever again. Sadness.
Here Are The Biggest Dating Mistakes
Want to know what the biggest dating mistakes are so that you can avoid them? They include showing up too late (come on ladies, we need to be more punctual), talking too much about ourselves, being way too keen, and talking too much about our ex.
The good thing is that all these mistakes can easily be avoided. Plan your journey so that you don’t turn up late, play it cool, don’t even think about your ex, and ask questions.
You Have To Be Positive
It’s probably obvious that no one wants to date a negative person. But it’s worth reinforcing the message that we like to date positive, happy people.
If you can be happy on a first date, there is a great chance that you’ll get a second one out of it.
Stay happy!
