Lana Del Rey's "Once Upon a Dream" - Song Review

Following the release of two diverse, critically-acclaimed projects in 2012, it now seems that former Internet sensation, Lana Del Rey, has become the go-to girl for movie soundtrack ballads. While her absolutely brilliant "Young and Beautiful", off the soundtrack for The Great Gatsby, tragically did not receive the Academy Award nomination it deserved this year, it looks like she is holding no grudge and aiming high with attempt number two.

Building up excitement for the release of Disney's buzzed-about Maleficent, Del Rey has contributed her haunting, show-stopping vocals for a new, re-imaginative rendition of the classic Sleeping Beauty song, "Once Upon a Dream". While fans got a quick taste of the dark performance during a recently released trailer featuring Angelina Jolie as the lead character, the full version of the background track from the "Born to Die" songstress gives viewers a sense of the mood for the upcoming film.

"Once Upon a Dream" is essentially an unexpected cover of the memorable 1959 Disney theme song, although Lana Del Rey has put her unique spin on the classic for the 2014 update. Instead of a cheery, fairy princess vibe, the artist gives the song a sinister feel, as if Jolie's title character were singing it herself. The production creates a eerie, dark fantasy mood for the new single as Del Rey's impressive vocal performances make the song a must hear and early award contender for next Oscar season. The artist could continue to do covers similar to this one, I would not mind.

"But if I know you, I know what you'll do, you'll love me at once, the way you did once upon a dream," Del Rey sings about the hypnotic enchantment that is love. The new film is taking the traditional story book fairytale and completely turning it on its head. There was no other way to incorporate the accompanying opening track then by giving it a necessary modern interpretation. After hearing "Young and Beautiful" and being handpicked by Jolie to get the job done, it seems like the only viable choice was Del Rey. This performance screams chart-topper, but it, more importantly, screams for Oscar gold.
