Oops... she did it again. Legendary pop princess Britney Spears teams up with Australian raptress Iggy Azalea for one of the most anticipated, and long-awaited, collaborations of the past decade. Will this new single put the "Work Bitch" singer atop the pop throne once again?
"Pretty Girls", first announced in 2014 as a possible Little Mix release, is a true duet (notice the ampersand) between the two female starlets as Spears and Azalea trade verses of how girls are better than the boys over an electronic hip-hop beat reminiscent of the "something more urban" sound found on Spears' 2007 Blackout. It's a loud and energetic pop-leaning release that bares similarities to Azalea's own hit "Fancy" featuring Charli XCX.
Following the disappointing commercial performance of Spears' last full album release, it appears the singer is moving away from the generic dance-pop stylings that plagued Britney Jean, in exchange for a more aggressive, modern, radio-friendly effort. "All around the world, pretty girls wipe the floor with all the boys, pour the drinks, bring the noise," the two sing on the catchy chorus.
The new single, which clocks in at under three minutes, is a simple release that highlights Spears' ability to still sound like an actual human being, with little use of AutoTune, while Azalea's added rap verse proves her dominance in the genre which received backlash over the last few months. However, there is something missing on the effort. It may be exciting the first time through, but in the end, "Pretty Girls" is sadly underwhelming.
It falters from not sounding refreshing or groundbreaking enough, Gwen Stefani comes to mind throughout, but it should not have a problem bringing Spears back to the top of the charts. It's certainly a fun, enjoyable bop. The pairing was not a shock or surprise, the collaboration was welcomed, it just feels that "Pretty Girls" could not possibly have been the best idea the two artists, and their teams, could have come up with. Right?
